Saturday Horse Racing Tips

It’s the last day of the flat season and the ITV cameras are at Doncaster to televise the action.

British EBF Gillies Fillies’ Stakes

The ground has turned soft (good to soft in places) at the Yorkshire track after last night’s storms and the first race is a listed contest for fillies at 1.30pm.

We think the race will be dominated by a pair of unexposed Frankel offspring – Anasheed and BONA FIDE. Both surely have more to offer, with the latter, in particular, likely to be suited by the step up in trip here. Legendary Irish trainer, Dermott Weld, surely wouldn’t have brought her all this way if he didn’t think she could win.

Wentworth Stakes

The sprinters take centre stage next in another listed race, where the class performers are Donjaun Triumphant and our old favourite, LIBRISA BREEZE. They both like plenty of give underfoot, and so look to have solid claims, and slight preference is for Dean Ivory’s grey in the hope that he can bounce back to his best after a couple of poor recent efforts.

The other one to back is the much less experienced, HEY JONSEY. He has won on good to soft, and was good enough to be fifth in the Commonwealth Cup at Royal Ascot earlier in the campaign.

November Handicap

The last big betting heat of the flat season is the November Handicap at 3.15pm and it would be ironic if it fell to one of the sport’s top jumps trainers, Paul Nicholls. However, we think that could easily happen as BIRDS OF PREY, ridden by his daughter Megan, looks to have a massive chance.

He acts on the ground and has looked likely to improve for this step up in trip based on recent efforts over shorter.

There are plenty of dangers, as you’d expect in such a large field, and the other two to back are TO BE WILD, who returns off a long absence on a very handy looking mark, and MY LORD AND MASTER, who disappointed two starts ago, but seemed to come back better than ever in his last race. He was second in a Derby trial earlier in the campaign.

Seafarer, Buzz and Everything For You are others to consider.

Badger Ales Trophy Handicap Chase

Paul Nicholls will most likely be at his local track, rather than Doncaster, and the ITV cameras will be there too as it is Badger Ales day at Wincanton.

The big race is at 3.35pm and the ground at the Somerset circuit will still suit those looking for better ground as the track seems to have missed the worst of the weather. They include SUMKINDOFKING, who was a close third behind Bigbadjohn here on firm going last time out. He can reverse that form with Noel Fehily taking over from an amateur in the saddle.

If there is more rain in the West Country then that would also bring RAMSES DE TEILLEE into the equation. He looks well treated on the pick of his best form last season and surely has a big prize in him this campaign.

Rewards4Racing Handicap Chase

There’s also a decent handicap chase for punters to get stuck into at Aintree, where it will be very interesting to see how an ex-Nicholls inmate, BOUVREIUL, goes for his new yard. He’s very well handicapped if able to bounce back to anything like his best.

Of the fancied runners, Romain de Senam, looks the pick, but better value might lie with WAR SOUND. He is on a good mark based on his best hurdles form and Phillip Hobbs’ yard is in much better form this season.
