Saturday Horse Racing Tips

There’s no doubting the quality of the racing on offer this afternoon, but some very small fields mean there are very few decent punting opportunities.

For example, there are question marks over all three runners who go to post for one of the last Gold Cup trials of the season – the Denman Chase. Native River and Saphir Du Rheu have long absences to overcome, whilst Cloudy Dream has his stamina to prove, especially if Richard Johnson goes out hard on Native River. All in all, it looks a race to watch.

The Game Spirit Chase

There are only a trio of contenders for the Game Spirit Chase too and the outsider of them, Valdez, has a massive 1204 day absence to overcome.

The race could turn tactical and with a definitive fitness edge POLITOLOGUE looks a decent bet to upset the favourite for this (and the Queen Mother in March), Altior.

Betfair Hurdle

The one race for value seekers is the Betfair Hurdle, and with bookmakers going 10/1 the field it looks a wide open renewal and the place to concentrate our efforts. Thankfully, the race sponsors are offering a bumper six places.

Of those near the head of the market, we like the two Nicky Henderson runners, Kayf Grace and Verdana Blue, and the novice, Kalashnikov.

In the end, we have plumped for KALASHNIKOV, who caught our eye at Sandown last time out when running a mighty race in defeat in a Grade 1 on ground he hated. Provided the Berkshire circuit doesn’t get any more rain he can take this prize before heading to Cheltenham for one of the big novice races there.

Waterlord is interesting now sent handicapping for the first time. His is a yard that does well with this type of horse and he was also on the shortlist.

There are also plenty to fear at bigger prices and we could easily see another major Saturday prize go the way of one of the many talented lady jockeys around at the moment as both COEUR BLIMEY and SPIRITOFTHEGAMES look to have good chances for Lucy Gardner and Bridget Andrews respectively.

The two clashed recently over 2m5f in a decent handicap at Kempton and both will be suited by a step back in trip and a strongly run 2 miles. Both also have first time cheekpieces, which should be a help for Coeur Blimey in particular as he’s been let down by his jumping in recent starts.

Don’t rule out the bottom one either as ZALVADOS has some decent form in the bank for an in-form Oliver Greenall. First time blinkers could eek out further improvement and his claimer takes a useful 7lbs off his back. He is one to back with one of the bookies offering 6 places, especially if you can snaffle some 40/1.

Kingmaker Novices’ Chase

Warwick’s feature race is the Kingmaker and SAINT CALVADOS looks a strong and worthy favourite here for Harry Whittingdon. His French import will love the ground and gets weight from his rivals.

Warwick Castle Handicap Chase

The handicap chase that follows is also live on ITV4 and it can see KYLMORE LOUGH finally get back to winning ways. He is very well handicapped for his new trainer and the soft ground shouldn’t inconvenience him at all.
