Saturday Horse Racing Tips

Today’s live ITV4 races are from Kempton Park at 1.50, 2.25, 3.00 and 3.35, Lingfield Park, at 2.05 and 3.15 and Newcastle, at 2.45.

Betdaq Handicap Chase

Today’s feature is the Betdaq Handicap Chase at Kempton, where the going is good to soft, good in places after a frosty night at the Sunbury circuit.

There are three “Theatres” in the line-up and with the prodigy of Kings Theatre tending to like better ground it is easy to see the trio running big races, including 2016 winner Theatre Guide.

Preference, though, is for the other two – THEATRE TERRITORY and TINTERN THEATRE – both of whom we’ve tipped up already this season.

Theatre Territory was an excellent second in a hot race at Cheltenham last time out when he was beaten by a well handicapped horse. The front two were well clear that day and despite a 4lbs rise in the weights she still looks fairly treated. The first time cheek pieces can eek out some further improvement.

Tintern Theatre won for us over course and distance at Christmas, and travelled like the best horse for a long way in a big race at Haydock last time out before the ground and the longer trip that day started to take their toll. With his ideal conditions today he can resume winning ways.

Art Mauresque and Jossess Hill are interesting of those at bigger prices.

Betfred are offering 4 places for each-way bets on this race.

Pendil Novices’ Chase

ITV’s coverage at Kempton starts with the Pendil Novices’Chase, where CYRNAME is a worthy, odds-on favourite. He’ll have a fitness edge over The Unit and should also be backed in a double with Redicean, who looks an equally solid option in the Adonis.

Adonis Juvenile Hurdle

HARMONISE is also worthy backing in the juvenile contest as she looks underrated for her shrewd trainer, Sheena West. She could easily be two from two had she not been brought down at the last at Ascot on her first start. She made all at Plumpton to put the record straight after that and looks to be a real battler, ready to punch above her weight.

Dovecote Novices’ Hurdle

The Dovecote is next and it features a number of interesting new recruits from the flat. One of them is MICHAEL’S MOUNT who proved he’s cut out for the winter game when winning his only start over hurdles at Doncaster two weeks ago. We’ve been singing the praise of his trainer, Ian Williams, for a while now and there are few better dual purpose handlers about.

Also take a chance on SHOAL BAY, with the Tizzard yard back in form. He’s a chasing type who’ll have benefited from a lay off over the worst of the winter. The better ground could see an improved performance today in a wide-open contest.

Betfred Eider Handicap Chase

Newcastle’s feature is the Eider Chase, where the ground will be heavy, sticky and extremely stamina sapping.

It looks a competitive race and our shortlist was longer than usual with no fewer than seven runners catching our eye.

A lot will depend on who copes best with conditions especially amongst the improving young stayers like Vinnie Lewis, Themanfrom Minella and Back To The Thatch.

However, we prefer a couple of horses with a few more years under their belt in the shape of BAYWING and WEST OF THE EDGE.

Baywing has a touch of class about him and has always looked likely to excel at marathon trips, whilst Richard Newland is in fine form at the moment and is always a man to be respected especially with his Irish imports. West Of The Edge looks to have been laid out for this.

Hainan is another to fear, but if you want to back an outsider take a chance on THEBARROWMAN, who looks well handicapped if able to cope with this huge step up in trip. Hopefully, it will be the making of him and don’t forget another Irish raider, Raz de Maree, stole the Welsh National last month to suggest their horses are often well treated when they turn up on these shores.

Race sponsors Betfred are offering 5 places for each-way bets on this race.
