Saturday Horse Racing Tips

Sandown’s bet365 meeting brings the curtain down on another sensational jumps season this afternoon and the feature race, as always, is the bet365 Gold Cup.

bet365 Gold Cup Handicap Chase

The ground has softened slightly overnight, but it will still hopefully be okay for our main fancy, MINELLA DADDY. He didn’t like the heavy ground at Cheltenham last time out, but had looked progressive before that and his yard has done well in this race before. Peter Bowen is also a man in form at the moment and his son James claims a very valuable 3lbs.

Another horse who wouldn’t want the ground to deteriorate any more is the potentially very well handicapped Carole’s Destrier, who has been out of form recently but who looks to have his ideal conditions today. The key could be the first time headgear, which will hopefully bring about a revival.

Tempted though we are by his chances we are instead going to give a second chance to Carole’s Destrier’s stablemate, THE YOUNG MASTER, who fell early on in the Scottish National when carrying our money. The reasons we wanted to back him last week still hold true and the fact he won this race in 2016 is another plus.

The other one to back is BIGBADJOHN, who still looks unexposed for Nigel Twiston-Davies. The heavy winter ground has been against him for most of the campaign, but he showed plenty of sparkle on his first start for his new yard at Kempton in February when the ground was more in his favour.

Sugar Baron is a danger if he doesn’t get too far behind early on whilst Blaklion looks sure to run his race despite top weight.

bet365 Novices’ Championship Final Handicap Hurdle

The other big betting heat on the card at the Esher track is the opening novices’ handicap hurdle. It looks a really hard puzzle to solve, but we do like the chances of THE NEW PHAROAH for an under-estimated yard that often has horses run well in this type of contest at big prices.

EQUUS AMADEUS looks a threat for the in-form Tom Lacey as he has a decent swing in the weights with Highway One O One on their recent Kempton clash, whilst FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHT would be one of the favourites if you can forgive him his recent Sandown flop.

bet365 Celebration Chase

There is a Grade 1 and a Grade 2 in between the two big field handicaps and Nicky Henderson should take them both courtesy of Top Notch and his superstar two miler, Altior.  It is hard to find a betting angle in either race although AR MAD is a big enough price to warrant an each-way bet in the Celebration Chase in the hope that he can at least beat all bar Altior.

There is also one race on ITV from Haydock’s flat meeting and the favourite, MJJACK, looks a solid bet in the 2.05pm as seven furlongs on soft ground is perfect from him. He is also race fit after his win at Newmarket recently. He can overcome his 6lbs rise before going on to better things.
