Saturday Horse Racing Tips

It is the first Classic of the season at Newmarket today and this year’s renewal of the 2,000 Guineas looks well up to standard.

Qipco 2000 Guineas Stakes

As always, Aiden O’Brien has strong claims and he saddles the front two in the market in Gustav Klimt and Saxon Warrior. The former is a short enough price in such a competitive race, whilst the later may need the run and/or further in time.

It was tempting to go for both Masar and Elarqam.

Masar was so impressive in the Craven last time out, but may have had the run of the race there. Elarqam is royally bred and unbeaten in two starts. He has done his winning on good to soft and if he has the pace to stay in the contest early on he will be a real threat as he is sure to finish his race strongly.

In the end, though, we have plumped for EXPERT EYE and ROARING LION. They both have something to prove, but are trained by the best about and the fact that they line-up here is something of a tip in itself.

Roaring Lion was well beaten in the Craven, but was said to be only 80% fit that day. The soft ground was probably all that stopped him beating Saxon Warrior in the Racing Post Trophy.

Expert Eye looked a potential superstar last season before flopping in the Dewhurst. He pulled too hard in the Greeham, but with that freshness taken out of him we could see the old Expert Eye today.

Raid and Tip Two Win are interesting at massive prices.

Paddy Power are offering 4 places for each way bets on this race.

Spring Lodge Stakes

The Newmarket card opens with a competitive looking handicap over a mile and a furlong, and favourite Sharja Bridge looks the one to beat.

However, he’s not much of a price and John Gosden could be the man to follow here again as DOMMERSEN looks to have a big chance if able to improve on his comeback effort on the all-weather five weeks ago. That was his first run since being gelded and, like Roaring Lion, he should come on a bundle for that pipe opener.

The main danger may again be a Charlie Appleby runner as OASIS CHARM looked a horse on the upgrade when winning at Chelmsford on his re-appearance. He is up five pounds but should have more to give back on turf.

Another Eclipse is also worthy of a second look.

Betfred are offering 5 places for each-way bets on this race.

Longholes Palace House Stakes

With nine runners going to post in the Palace House Stakes, and Havana Grey being a warm favourite this morning, there is a nice each way shape to the contest and we’d suggest backing ORNATE and JUDICIAL at decent prices.

Ornate had good form for Robert Cowell last season, but has since joined David Griffiths, who also does really well with sprinters. This is his first run for the yard and his first start since a wind operation.

Judicial’s form last season pretty much matches the best of any of these and if he is fully wound up for his re-appearance we should be in the shake-up.

Matchbook Handicap

The ITV cameras are also at Goodwood, where the big betting race is the seven furlong handicap at 2.40pm.

The draw often plays a big part in these races at the Sussex circuit and MASHAM STAR has pole position in stall one, especially if Joe Fanning can get him to the front early. If he does, he could be hard to peg back as he is race fit and has form over further.

The big danger could be last year’s third, THE WARRIOR, for a yard whose runners always have to be respected at their local track.
