Saturday Horse Racing Tips

The day’s most prestigious race, the Lockinge, also happens to be the best betting heat of the afternoon, especially with plenty of bookies offering four places.

Al Shaqab Lockinge Stakes

With no stand out candidate, and question marks over plenty of the runners, a shock is a real possibility, so supporting a trio of these at big prices could be the way to go.

Top of our shortlist of those at double figure odds is SUEDIOS. On paper, he may be a few pounds short of some of these, but he always runs his race and has less question marks over him than many of his rivals. A mile on quick ground is perfect for him and he seemed to reach a new level of form when winning at Leopardstown and Keenland last season.

At even more tasty prices, cases can also be made for Accidental Agent and Zonderland.

ACCIDENTAL AGENT arguably has the most scope for improvement. He was a very smart handicapper over this sort of trip last campaign and his yard has started this season very well.

The same is true of the Clive Cox stable and he trains the lightly raced ZONDERLAND. Injury has curtailed his appearances in recent times and, as a result, there is a strong suspicion that the best is yet to come from a colt who has the ground very much in his favour here.

Shalaa Carnarvon Stakes

It isn’t easy to find angles in the other televised races from Newbury, with smallish fields prevalent.

In the 1.50pm, take a chance on JULIET CAPULET who is down in trip today. She showed good early speed when winning over 7f last season, but didn’t last home over a mile at the Breeders Cup.

The rank outsider, ALL OUT, also arguably has a better chance than her price suggests. The key with her is that she is going back up to 6f today. She also gets 5lbs from her rivals, which might help her bridge the ratings gap.

Al Zubarah London Gold Cup Handicap

In the London Gold Cup at 3.00pm, the market leader, MASAARR, looks the one to beat. Roger Varian’s three year old should find more now stepping up in trip again meaning a recent 8lbs hike in the weights might not be enough to stop him.

Back on quicker ground, expect to see better from GLENCADAM MASTER too. He holds a Derby entry and was well supported on his return. He seemed to get bogged down in the soft ground that day and deserves another chance.

Betway Handicap

The best betting heat over at Newmarket is the Betway Handicap at 3.15pm, where Richard Hannon has a strong hand courtesy of Yafta and Mayyasah.  Of the pair, we narrowly prefer the latter, but the one to support near the head of the market is SHOWMETHEDOUGH as the step up to 6f looks key. He represents the yard that took this in 2011 and 2014.

Of the outsiders, both Nine Below Zero and Dahik are worth a second look.

NINE BELOW ZERO bounces off the ground and looked a two year old to follow before losing his form in big races / on unsuitable ground. It is interesting that he has stayed in training and he’s been gelded over the winter.

DAHIK has his second start today for Mick Easterby, who only ever tends to head this far south when he thinks he has a chance of landing a decent pot. As with Showmethedough, the extra furlong today could unlock some more potential.

Coral and Paddy Power are both offering 4 places for each way bets on this race.
