Saturday Horse Racing Tips

Today’s the last real chance to get some money in the bank before Royal Ascot starts next week, and there’s televised action from Chester, Sandown and York.

The pick of the action is from York’s Knavesmire where there are two big field handicaps to get stuck into.

JCB Handicap

The first is over 7f at 2.25pm, where warm favourite Spanish City looks worthy of his place at the head of the market. His short price does, however, mean there is value elsewhere and the one we like is GOLDEN APOLLO who looks sure to be suited by this step up in trip having been seen to good effect in the latter stages of competitive races over 6f recently. He’s also a course winner on this sort of ground.

As well as supporting Tim Easterby’s runner we’d suggest keeping it in the family and also backing Mick Easterby’s ROLLER. He’s lightly raced and although his best form last season was over a mile the drop back in trip shouldn’t be a problem in what is likely to be a fast run race.

Ladbrokes and Paddy Power are offering 4 places for each-way bets on this race.

Pavers Foundation Catherine Memorial Sprint

The other big handicap is for three year olds over 6f and JAWWAAL looks the stand out option for John Gosden here. This is his first venture into handicap company and he’s shown plenty of pace in winning his two starts over 7f this season.

With 20 runners, and a draw conundrum to solve, there is the chance of horses being placed at least at big odds and the two outsiders we like are SOLDIER’S MINUTE, who is sure to be suited by dropping back in trip as he’s such a free going sort, and GREAT PROSPECTOR, who also returns to sprinting and represents a jockey / trainer combination that has to be respected.

Betfair are offering 5 places for each-way bets on this race.

Grand Cup Stakes

In between the two handicaps is a Listed Race over 1m 6f and MARMELO looks the pick of the runners. He’s not a great price and so might be worth backing in a win double with Spanish City (4.25). Both runners have the champion, Ryan Moore, on board.

Randox Health Scurry Stakes

The two ITV races from Sandown kick off with the Scurry Stakes at 2.05pm

This looks a funny race, where a shock is possible. On that basis it might be worth taking a chance on the twice raced YOUKAN, who could be open to any amount of improvement. It is interesting that his trainer pitches him in the deep end here.

Randox Health Handicap

The Randox Health Handicap at 3.15pm can go the way of the top weight, SILVER LINE, who has been crying out for this mile trip. He run consistently well at Meydan over the spring and doesn’t look badly treated on his return to this country.
