Saturday Horse Racing Tips

There are an incredible ten races on ITV4 this afternoon as racing starts to get back to normal after the equine flue scare, and they include a number of contests that have been re-arranged from last weekend.

Betfair Hurdle

It is hard to know where to start, but the pick of the action is probably at Ascot, which stages two races that should have featured as part of Newbury’s big day last Saturday. They include the Betfair Hurdle, which can go the way of GETAWAY TRUMP on what could be a big day for the Paul Nicholls yard.

Nicholls always seems to have one or two laid out for this race and the fact that Getaway Trump is proven over further than two miles should be a plus if we get the usual breakneck gallop here.

The big danger could be the lightly raced ZANA, who should love the ground. He looks to have more scope for improvement than many of his rivals.

BBA Ireland Limited Opera Hat Mares Chase

Having suggested backing Clan Des Obeaux for the Gold Cup before his fourth in the Betfair Chase in November we hope he wins the Denman Chase this afternoon, but he is no sort of price, so instead focus on the Swinley Chase, where a former Gold Cup winner, Coneygree, lines up.

It would be great to see the former champion win again here, but the ground may be a bit lively for him so we would suggest backing CALIPTO instead as he seemed to take the step up to three miles well when third in a big handicap at Doncaster last time out.

Sodexo Reynoldstown Novices’ Chase

It could be a good day for his trainer, Venetia Williams, who often excels with her chasers here and who has the unexposed YALLTARI in the Reynoldstown.

Betfair Ascot Chase

Williams also has the fast improving Aso in the Betfair Chase at 3.55pm, a contest that looks like being one of the highlights of the season so far.

Six of the best over the two and a half mile trip go to post and put their Ryanair credentials on the line in the process and the one we think has most improvement in him over this distance is FOX NORTON.

He was well fancied for last year’s King George and the season prior to that he put up a massive performance to win at Aintree over this sort of trip. A return to that level of form here should see him go close and he looks the value.

Rendlesham Hurdle

Up at Haydock the action kicks off with the Rendlesham, where the consistent SHADES OF MIDNIGHT can serve it up to hot favourite Yanworth on a track he likes. The form of his second to Paisley Park here earlier in the season makes good reading now, given what the winner that day has since gone on to achieve.

Grand National Trial Handicap Chase

The other race on ITV from the Merseyside track is the Grand National Trial, and we are going to look to another Venetia Williams chaser here in the shape of Yala Enki. He has a big weight, but he has won from the top of the handicap before and a seven pound claimer will also aid his cause. He was an excellent third in the Welsh National last time out and seems better than ever this campaign, which is saying something given that he won this race last season.

The fast improving THE TWO AMIGOS and BALLYOPTIC are the other ones to back, with Royal Vacation and Ballyoptic’s stablemate, Ballyarthur, also feared.

Wincanton’s big race is the Kingwell Hurdle at 3.00, where JOLLY’S CRACKED IT (12/1 Unibet) could be the value, with doubts over Sceau Royal and Vision Des Flos, whilst MONALEE (evens) should take the Red Mills Chase at Gowran Park at 2.30 in the absence of Presenting Percy.
