Saturday Horse Racing Tips

All eyes are on Ascot today, where there is a stellar six race card on Champions Day. The action kicks off at 1.25pm with the Long Distance Cup, and the whole meeting is televised on ITV.

Qipco British Champions Long Distance Cup

In the opener, star stayer Stradivarius looks to bag his fifth major staying prize in a season that has also seen him scoop a £1 million bonus. He is a class above his rivals, but there are a few concerns over the ground and he has had a hard season.

On the off chance that he is below par it may be worth backing the unexposed Aiden O’Brien pair of CYPRESS CREEK and SIR EREC. Neither has run in a race of this quality before, but if the soft ground is to throw up a shock either one could provide it. They both otherwise have chances of filling the second each way place if they can beat stablemate Flag Of Honour.

Qipco British Champions Sprint Stakes

From the stayers to the sprinters, and many of the best six furlongs performers around contest the Champion Sprint Stakes at 2.00pm.

THE TIN MAN is the form pick here after his fine win on heavy ground in the Sprint Cup at Haydock recently. He’s also a course and distance specialist and so looks to have plenty in his favour this afternoon.

There are plenty of outsiders you could fancy too. They include DREAM OF DREAMS who has looked just below top class this season, but who has his ideal conditions today and the assistance of Ryan Moore from the saddle.

SANDS OF MALI would also have a chance if back to the form that saw him finish second in the Commonwealth Cup at the Royal Ascot meeting.

CoralLadbrokes and Paddy Power are all offering 4 places for each-way bets.

Qipco British Champions Fillies & Mares Stakes

Next up are the fillies and mares, and another John Gosden favourite dominates the market. Again, it will be interesting to see how Lah Ti Dar copes with the softer going, so the each way value may lie with MAGICAL.

We tipped her up in the Arc on the basis of the step up in trip there and she seemed to relish it as she was beaten only 5 lengths in a fast finishing tenth.

The other one to back is the jolly’s stablemate, CORONET, who often runs well here. If the ground dries out she will be very hard to keep out of the frame.

Queen Elizabeth II Stakes

One of the biggest stars on show is Roaring Lion, who drops back in trip in the QE II Stakes at 3.15pm. He has done us multiple favours already this season, but the distance and ground may not be ideal, so we are reluctantly going to take him on with another favourite of ours, LORD GLITTERS. He’ll definitely relish any give underfoot and won the big handicap on this card last year.

At a similar price, another big improver from handicap company, ADDEYBB, also has his conditions. He struggled in the Lockinge, but that was on fast ground and he has been laid out (and freshened up) for this since.

Of the outsiders, LIGHTNING SPEAR looks the pick as he is a specialist miler and seems to have taken his form to new levels this season (including gaining a much deserved first Group 1 success in the Sussex Stakes).

Qipco Champion Stakes

With Roaring Lion going for the mile contest instead, the Champion Stakes looks to be at the mercy of his stablemate, CRACKSMAN.

It has been a slightly disappointing campaign for John Godsen’s four year old and his master handler felt his mind wasn’t on the job in the Prince Of Wales’s Stakes. As a result, he has first time headgear today and also more suitable ground conditions.

He looks to have a major chance of registering back to back wins in the race.

Balmoral Handicap

The only handicap on the card is the final contest at 4.30pm and recent course winner RAISING SAND will surely take all the beating here. He loves this track and must have soft ground to be at his best.

Flaming Spear is a big danger if staying the trip, but better value may lie with WAARIF, who has been in fine form all campaign.

Also don’t rule out CIRCUS COUTURE at a monster price. He flopped last time out, but prior to that had run well both in a Group race on heavy at Haydock and in the Hunt Cup here on a faster surface.

Kynren and Mitchum Swagger are others to consider.
