Saturday Horse Racing Tips

There’s a top class jumps card at Ascot today to warm punters up ahead of the busy festive period.

My Pension Expert Handicap Chase

The action on ITV4 kicks off with a handicap chase at 1.50pm that looks tailormade for DE DOLLAR MAN.

Evan Williams’ seven year old ran a cracker on his comeback at Newbury last month on good ground. Given that this unexposed chaser loves some give underfoot that was a particularly noteworthy effort and he looks to have ideal conditions here this afternoon.

JLT Hurdle

The day’s Grade 1 is the Long Walk Hurdle and it would be no surprise to see some of the market leaders beaten, so we are going to take a chance on PAISLEY PARK.

This horse rallied with some effect to win a very valuable handicap at Haydock on his last start and looks a stayer on the upgrade. There are some concerns over the ground, but stamina looks to be his forte and he did win on soft as a novice.

The other one to back is WEST APPROACH, who looks massively overpriced on his return to hurdles. He would have been placed in this race as a novice a couple of years ago but for falling at the last and he ran really well for a long way in the top class Ladbrokes Chase last time out.

Garrard Silver Cup Handicap Chase

Two competitive handicaps follow – one over hurdles and one over fences.

In the Silver Cup Handicap Chase, FULL GLASS looks the one to beat. This French import has only had two starts in this country so far, showing promise on both occasions. Crucially, this is the first time he has had his preferred going. The longer trip should suit too and enable him to get in a better rhythm over the fences.

Provided he doesn’t bounce on his second start after a long absence, OTAGO TRAIL looks the one most likely to chase home our main selection.

Venetia Williams does extremely well with her runners here, particularly in handicap chases, and this horse is well handicapped based on his best form of two seasons ago.

Betfair Exchange Trophy

The extremely competitive Betfair Exchange Hurdle closes proceedings and of those at the head of the weights it is probably worth giving another chance to the classy CYRUS DARIUS on only his second start for the Tizzard yard. This horse was good enough in the past to be considered a serious Champion Hurdle contender and he showed signs of that sort of quality before fading late on in his comeback race.

With less weight to carry, LORD NAPIER is also worth an interest. He is lightly raced and ran well last time out on good ground at Wincanton. A fast run race, on this softer ground and around a stiffer circuit should bring his proven stamina into play.

For the final selection it was a toss-up between NOT NEVER and Tornado Watch and slight preference is for Not Never for a yard that has excelled with its handicap hurdlers in recent years.

Sponsors Betfair are offering 6 places for each-way bets on this race and William Hill go one better by offering 7 places.

Smarkets Tommy Whittle Handicap Chase

Up at Haydock the ground is even softer, so the Tommy Whittle will be a real slog. That should suit the youngster in the field, DAKLONDIKE, who loves heavy ground and should be spot on for this after a pipe opener at Cheltenham recently.

Also take a chance on SPLASH OF GINGE, who has become inconsistent, but who is well treated if back to his best. He has won here before and also loves it when the mud is flying.

In the other televised race from the Merseyside track course specialist, CHTI BALKO, looks the one to beat.
