Saturday Horse Racing Tips

It’s trials day at Cheltenham today and the action kicks off on ITV at 1.50pm with a handicap chase over two and a half miles.

Spectra Trophy Handicap Chase

Ironically, this is the race that is least likely to provide any clues for the big meeting in March, but it is a competitive contest in its own right and could go the way of Janika if he copes with the trip and ground on only his second start in the UK.

Better value, though, surely lies with ACTIVAL who has run very well over hurdles here in the past and who now seems to finding his feet over fences for Tom George. He will enjoy the forecast good ground too.

BetBright Trial Cotswold Chase

The Cotswold Chase is a genuine Gold Cup trial and if any of today’s runners goes on to win the sport’s biggest prize it will probably be Elegant Escape. However, this may not be a stiff enough test of stamina for the Welsh National winner so the finish could be fought out by course specialist Frodon and TERREFORT.

The latter flopped at Kempton on his comeback, but looks the one to back here in the hope that he can return to his top class novice form of last season.

Ballymore Novices’ Hurdle

The novices are up next in the Ballymore Novices’ Hurdle where BREWIN’UPASTORM looks to have a big chance of gaining compensation for his defeat last time out when we tipped him to win the Challow. The stiffer track and longer trip will play to his strengths and he should take plenty of beating.

None of the trio of outsiders can be totally ruled out either and it would be no surprise to see one of them hit the frame. The one that appeals most is NOT THAT FUISSE who is unexposed at this trip and ran well in the Greatwood here in November.

The Wolf will also be winning races soon and is one for the notebook.

Cleeve Hurdle

The most competitive race on the card is the Cleeve Hurdle and that probably reflects the fact that there is no stand out staying hurdler around at the moment.

A shock could be on the cards and THE MIGHTY DON looks the one to have been most underestimated by the bookies. He won for us here earlier in the season and has improved since despite stepping up in class. He stays all day and has his ideal underfoot conditions so grab some of the 33/1 on offer with a few layers this morning.

Midnight Shadow and Black Op are obvious dangers, but the other one to back is the revitalised AUX PTITS SOINS who looks to have less question marks over him than most and who goes particularly well at the track.

Sky Bet Handicap Chase

The big race at Doncaster is the Sky Bet Chase and DINGO DOLLAR looks to have the race at his mercy if he can repeat his effort in the Ladbrokes Trophy last time out. He is able to run off the same mark here and relishes good ground.

Of those at bigger prices CALIPTO makes most appeal as Venetia Williams has her chasers in good form this season. This horse would have won his last two races but for falling on his penultimate start and he could improve again now stepped up to three miles.
