Saturday Horse Racing Tips

Punters are spoilt for choice for top class action this afternoon, with ten live races televised on Channel 4, from Newmarket, York and Ascot.

Darley July Cup     CH4

The July Cup is the day’s big race and with a large field going to post it is worth noting that Sky Bet are offering five places for each-way bets and Bet365 four places, especially if you fancy any of the long shots like we do.

One of the most interesting contenders is AROD, who actually contested the Derby as a three year old. This is a dramatic drop in trip compared to that mile and a half contest, but he has shown his best form since that Epsom effort over a mile and he is definitely worth a try over this stiff 6 furlongs.

He can front run and might be hard to beg pack on ground he loves.

By contrast, JUNGLE CAT is stepping up in trip following a series of good efforts over 5 furlongs since his return from Dubai. Those runs have suggested he needs this extra distance and he too will enjoy quicker going than he has often raced on this campaign. It is a surprise to see him as big a price as he is as he wasn’t far behind Profitable in both the Palace House and the King’s Stand.

GOKEN finished just ahead of Jungle Cat in the King’s Stand and he is the other one to be on. He was also doing all of his best work in the closing stages at Ascot and looks to be running into form at the right time. Trainer Kevin Ryan has a fine record with his sprinters and he may be eking out some improvement from this ex-French trained colt.

The ultra consistent Danzeno and the unexposed Limato are others to consider.

bet365 Bunbury Cup     CH4

The Bunbury Cup is the chief supporting contest at Newmarket and Peter Chapple-Hyam (trainer of Arod) has a big chance here too courtesy of BUCKSTAY.

He has regularly run well in these big field handicaps and should get plenty of cover here, which is a must for a horse that has to be played late. He has been creeping up the weights, but has a claimer on board today and relishes these conditions. He ran a big race in the Wokingham last time out.

BOSSY GUEST also ran well at Royal Ascot. The angle here is the drop back in trip as he had been running over much further until a fifth in the Hunt Cup showed that this sort of race could be more his cup of tea.

Plenty of others made the shortlist like Glorious Empire and Golden Steps, but we are going to give a final chance to GLORY AWAITS. He ran okay for us at Royal Ascot last time out and we are convinced David Simocok can get him back to winning ways as he ran good races at a much higher level for Kevin Ryan a few seasons ago.

Bet365 and Sky Bet are both offering 5 places for each-way bets on this race.

Heritage Handicap     CH4

At Ascot, the big betting heat is the Heritage Handicap and DESERT LAW looks a rock solid option. He is well drawn and often runs well here, including when third in this race last year off of today’s mark.

57th John Smith’s Cup     CH4

The John Smith’s Cup is York’s feature and James Fanshawe is a trainer to be respected when aiming one of his horses at a big pot.

ARTHENUS won here at the backend of last season to complete a hat-trick for Fanshawe and then looked to be returning to that level of form when finishing strongly last time out at Royal Ascot. A first time visor could make all the difference here.

Godolphin have been in great form with their handicappers this season and the other one to be on is CARRY ON DERYCK. This is a big step up in trip, but he ran well in Dubai over the winter and seems to be improving for his new yard.

Mijhaar is a fascinating contender on his first start for David O’Meara.

Once again, Bet365 and Sky Bet offer 5 places for each-way bets on this race.
