Saturday Horse Racing Tips

It is Betfair Chase day at Haydock this afternoon, with legendary chaser, Cue Card, looking for back to back wins in the race.

Betfair Chase

The soon to be 12 year old reportedly retains all of his old ability and enthusiasm at home, but he’ll have to be at his best to beat Bristol De Mai, with everything looking to be right for Nigel Twiston-Davies’ runner.

Neither horse is much of a price, so we’d suggest taking them on with TEA FOR TWO and TRAFFIC FLUIDE.

Tea For Two did us a favour at the Grand National meeting last spring and his comeback effort is best ignored. He shouldn’t be a 12/1 shot (with Paddy Power) based on that Aintree effort where he beat Cue Card in a thrilling finish. The one question mark is the going, as he may prefer better ground.

Paddy Power are also offering a standout 33/1 about Traffic Fluide, who tries this trip for the first time. He has been staying on in the closing stages of races over shorter distances, so it could bring about some improvement and his trainer thinks the heavy ground might suit him too.

Betfair Exchange Handicap Hurdle

The first race on ITV from Haydock is a handicap hurdle at 1.50pm where we like CHTI BALKO. Crucially, he has won here before on heavy ground and the Donald McCain yard is experiencing something of a revival this year. The extra couple of furlongs should suit this lightly raced 5 year old.

Betfair Stayers’ Handicap Hurdle

Next up is arguably the betting heat of the day, the Betfair Stayers Hurdle.

As you’d expect for the prize, it is a really competitive heat, but if he is back to his best CHAMPERS ON ICE might be capable of leaving these for dead.

He was a decent novice hurdler before going over fences with mixed results last season. Given his lenient looking mark, it makes sense for him to revert to hurdles and he has reportedly been targeted at this for a while. He loves heavy ground.

On what could be a good day for the Nick Williams yard, we think LE ROCHER is the main danger. He looks ready for the step up in trip.

The Dutchman and Templeross are others to note.

Race sponsors Betfair are offering 6 places for each-way bets on this race.

Best Odds Guaranteed With Betfair Handicap Chase

The last race on the card is another staying contest, this time over fences. The ground could be really tacky and holding by the end of the day so this looks likely to be a gruelling test. That should suit CHASE THE SPUD who ended last season with a win over four miles.

The other one to back is LESSONS IN MILAN, who could be a young stayer to follow this season for Nicky Henderson. He was fifth in last season’s Scottish National as a novice, beaten only 5 ½ lengths.

Christy 1965 Chase

The day’s other big meeting is at Ascot, where the feature is the Christy 1965 Chase.

Course specialist, Royal Regatta, looks sure to take them along at a fierce pace and he is always hard to pass around here.

However, we like the look of TOP GAMBLE, now upped in trip. He gets weight from some of his rivals, which could make all the difference.

Also on 11st 1lbs is DOUBLE SHUFFLE and he’s the other one to back. He has been taken out of a few decent contests in recent weeks on account of the ground, but with conditions set to suit today we think he can make his presence felt. He is clearly well thought of at home.

Shawbrook Handicap Chase

Another Tom George horse is worth backing in the Shawbrook Handicap Chase, as the ground has also come right for SIR VALENTINO.

He has San Benedeto to beat.

Coral Hurdle

Meanwhile, one of the favourites for the Champion Hurdle, Defi Du Seuil, returns in the Coral Hurdle, but he’ll have to be at his best to defeat LIL ROCKERFELLER, who is race fit and often runs well here.
