Saturday Horse Racing Tips

Underfoot conditions are set to be almost unraceable at both Haydock and Newbury this afternoon, and very few horses will be able to cope with the extremely testing ground.

It probably isn’t a day for going mad with your stakes, therefore, and the racing isn’t of the highest quality either.

Betfred Challow Novices’ Hurdle

The day’s big race is probably the Challow Hurdle at Newbury and Poetic Rhythm is the form horse. If he copes with the going he should win, but we think both outsiders have been underestimated and should be backed.

DANS LE VENT was a very decent bumper horse last season and has been crying out for this step up in trip over hurdles, whilst MULCAHYS HILL‘s trainer, Warren Greatrex, is convinced his horse will relish a slog through the mud. He won an Irish point to point in Ireland to prove his stamina for this test.

Betfred Mandarin Handicap Chase

Stamina will certainly be key in the Mandarin Chase at 2.25pm and that should bring SHOTGUN PADDY into the equation. He is very well handicapped on the best of his old form, and his yard has emerged from last season’s doldrums and is firing in the winners again. He goes well in the mud and has the cheekpieces back on today.

Ladbrokes are offering 4 places for each-way bets on this race.

Wishing You A Very Happy New Year Handicap Hurdle

ITV’s coverage from the Berkshire track starts with the handicap hurdle at 1.50pm and we think this race is between the bottom two in the weights, Diable De Sivola and Brave Eagle.

In the end, we have gone for DIABLE DE SIVOLA, with the Nick Williams stable in such good form.  We tipped him when he was fourth at Cheltenham last time out and he looked like an even stiffer test of stamina might suit him that day.  He’ll certainly get that here and he can start fulfilling his promise by finally getting his head back in front this afternoon.

Last Fling Handicap Chase

The ground is usually heavy at Haydock so course form is often a big advantage at the Merseyside circuit. That points to Emperors Choice in The Last Fling Chase at 2.10pm as he won this race in 2015. He looked to be coming back to his best when third last time out, but his price is contracting this morning so better value may now lay with JENNYS SURPRISE.

Fergal O’Brien does well with his stayers and this mare has first time cheekpieces on to help her today. Having made a winning return after a long layoff, she may have been turned out too quickly when fourth at Wincanton last time out. This longer trip may suit her better here as well.

The other one to back is LESSONS IN MILAN who was fifth in last year’s Scottish National. He ran well for a long way here on his comeback before fading and pulling up, and it is interesting that connections have decided to have another go in a similar race on similar ground. Daryl Jacob must have reported that he handled the conditions okay a month ago.

help4Matt Handicap Chase

The other televised race from Haydock is another handicap chase, this time over two and a half miles. We think the race revolves around Federici and Church Hall, and it might be worth backing one to cover a larger stake on the other. Of the pair, we narrowly prefer the lightly raced CHURCH HALL who seems to be improving fast for his young handler.
