Saturday Horse Racing Tips

The rescheduled Welsh National will be run at Chepstow this afternoon in extremely attritional conditions and the only certain thing is that very few of the 20 strong field will finish the contest.

Coral Welsh Grand National Handicap Chase

Mudlarks like Mysteree, Chase The Spud and Wild West Wind dominate the market for good reason, with the first pair also proven over extreme distances.

We wouldn’t put punters off backing any of that trio, but at a slightly bigger price we think today’s the day FINAL NUDGE can prove himself a stayer to follow.  He was running well behind Chase The Spud and Mysteree when falling at the fourth last in the Midlands Grand National and he ran really nicely on his comeback in the Badger Ales Trophy. He promises to stay and, if he does, he’ll be hard to beat.

At a similar price, MILANSBAR is also worth an interest. He completely lost his way last season, but has shown signs of a revival this term and is a thorough mudlark who stays all day. He is well handicapped if his return to form continues and he has run well here in the past.

Given conditions, a shock is eminently possible and the Evan Williams pair of On The Road and Firebird Flyer are interesting at long odds, but pick of the outsiders could prove to be O’FAOLAINS BOY.

Rebecca Curtis’ 11 year old (a former winner of the RSA Chase) is incredibly well handicapped on his best form and has won twice here before.

Barry Geraghty is an eye-catching jockey booking and the horse has had a wind operation since last seen on the track in April.

Race sponsors Coral and Betfair are both offering 5 places for each-way bets.

Coral Future Champions Finale Juvenile Hurdle

The other graded race on the Chepstow card is the Finale Hurdle, where We Have A Dream is a worthy favourite on form. However, he is unproven in these conditions and this track has a formbook all of its own, so it is worth backing both FAMOUS MILLY and MERCENAIRE to win, in the hope that one or other can upset the odds.

Veterans’ Handicap Chase

The going is also heavy at Sandown where a very valuable veterans’ chase is the feature.

This looks a significant drop in class for DOUBLE ROSS and with his stable hoovering up good prizes this season he looks the one to beat. He has won on heavy ground before.

There are dangers galore, including Gas Line Boy who is in the form of his life currently, and it is worth having a couple more strings to your bow given the competitive nature of the race.

This trip looks ideal for pervious course and distance winner, HOUBLON DES OBEAUX, who didn’t stay the longer trip on his last start here, whilst the old monkey, VINO GRIEGO, really catches the eye at the foot of the weights. This previous Festival winner is thrown in on old form and ran okay when last seen out at Lingfield.

Tolworth Novices’ Hurdle

The other big race at Sandown is the Tolworth Hurdle and we are going to take a chance on MONT DES AVALOIRS for a Paul Nicholls yard that has an excellent record in the race. Whatever this horse does here he looks one to follow in the longer term.

32Red Casino Handicap Chase

Meanwhile, the first televised race is a handicap chase over two miles, which can go the way of SPEREDEK.

We think Nigel Hawke is a trainer to follow and this horse has been a model of consistency recently. A couple of good efforts over hurdles will have put him spot on for this.
