Xander Schauffele showed the United States just what they were missing at the Ryder Cup as he rallied to win the HSBC Champions event in China.
Schauffele, who was one of the most prominent contenders to be overlooked for a wildcard pick for Jim Furyk’s team at Le Golf National, birdied the final two holes to force a play-off with Tony Finau, with the two finishing four shots clear of the field.
The world number 19 then took the title with a birdie at the first extra hole.
Schauffele’s big breakthrough came just over a year ago when he won the 2017 Tour Championship, to follow on from his victory at the Greenbrier Classic, but his victory this weekend was his first of 2018.
He has been widely tipped to be a future major winner and his next chance will come at Augusta in April. He is widely available at 66/1* to win The Masters, in which he tied for 50th place on his first appearance this year.
