Xander Schauffele underlined his burgeoning talent with a stunning victory at the Sentry Tournament of Champions. The tradional calendar year curtain-raiser is staged in Hawaii and features all of the previous year’s winners from the PGA Tour.
Schauffele was six shots behind third round leader Gary Woodland going into Sunday’s final round, but blitzed the course with an 11-under score of 62 to pip Woodland to the title by a single shot. Woodland’s consistent performance saw him post rounds of 67, 67, 68 and 68, but it wasn’t enough to secure first place.
As a result of his remarkable comeback win, Schauffele’s odds have been cut for each of the year’s majors.
The 25-year-old, who was runner-up at The Open and sixth at the US Open in 2018, is a best price of 50/1 with Ladbrokes and Coral to win The Masters in April, but that is a price that is unlikely to last.
All other major bookmakers have trimmed his odds to 33/1*. The picture is the same for the US Open, while Bet365, Ladbrokes and Coral have all moved his odds from 66/1 to 50/1 for this year’s Open at Royal Portrush.
