Boris Johnson is a best price of 9/2* with Bet365 to be the next leader of the Conservative Party as suspicions mount that he will soon launch a bid to oust Theresa May from the top job.
Johnson, who has the backing of members of the influential European Research Group of pro-Brexit MPs, including the likes of Jacob Rees-Mogg, has used opinion pieces in the Daily Telegraph and the Mail on Sunday to launch stinging attacks on May’s Brexit plan.
Since quitting as Foreign Secretary in protest at May’s Chequers deal, Johnson has become even more of a thorn in the prime minister’s side than he was as a maverick member of the cabinet. Johnson’s ambition to be prime minister is opposed by many of his fellow MPs and it is far from certain that he could garner sufficient support to win a leadership contest.
Other names in the frame include Home Secretary Sajid Javid, at 6/1* with Ladbrokes or Paddy Power, and Rees-Mogg and Michael Gove, who can each be backed at 8/1 with Ladbrokes. With party conference season approaching and both of the leading parties embroiled in battles over their future direction, there are sure to be plenty of twists and turns as we head into autumn and towards the deadline for the government to secure a deal with the EU.
