Serena’s Withdrawal Leaves Market Wide Open

The betting for the Australian Open women’s singles is wide open after Serena Williams confirmed she would not be defending her title in Melbourne. Williams beat older sister Venus in last year’s final but has since given birth to her first child and is not ready to return to action.

There are three former champions in the betting, but none of them are among the top five in the market, which is headed by Wimbledon champion Garbine Muguruza at 8/1 with Ladbrokes, Coral and Betfred.

Karolina Pliskova, world number one Simona Halep, Elina Svitolina and Caroline Wozniacki are all available between 8/1 and 11/1, with the 2008 winner Maria Sharapova a 12/1 chance with Betfred. Angelique Kerber, who beat Serena Williams to win the 2016 final, is at 14/1 with Stan James while Victoria Azarenka, who won in both 2012 and 2013, is the other former champion and can be backed at 33/1 with both Bet365 and Betfred.
