Venue

The TPC at Summerlin in Las Vegas hosts the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open, the event at which Tiger Woods won his first professional title 20 years ago. The par 71, 7,235-yeard layout relies on fairway bunkers and the occasional water hazard for protection but there are plenty of birdies to be made. It’s not the most memorable of courses, but it features a strong closing stretch including a driveable par four and a par three over water, which Jonathan Byrd aced to win a 3-man play-off in 2010. Smylie Kaufman won this title last year, holding off no fewer than six immediate challengers for a one-shot victory, and other recent winners include Ben Martin, Webb Simpson, Ryan Moore and Kevin Na.

Favourites

A wonderful run of results in late summer was enough to secure Ryan Moore a captain’s pick for the Ryder Cup and the former champion is the market leader for this event, although the book looks wide open. Moore can be backed at 22/1 with both Betfred and Coral, with Brooks Koepka at 25/1 with BetVictor and Coral. Chris Kirk is a 28/1 chance (generally), while Francesco Molinari is 30/1 with Paddy Power.

Tips

Patton KizzirePATTON KIZZIRE made a fabulous start to last season when he finished joint second at this event and he already has a runner-up finish to his name this season at the Safeway Open. His rookie year saw him make a respectable 20 cuts from 27 starts and post five top 10s and although he faded a little when the big guns were out in force, he was certainly competitive in the weaker fields such as this one. Betfred‘s price of 55/1 stands out as a solid each-way bet.

william-mcgirtWILLIAM MCGIRT finished 16th on the FedEx Cup list last season, comfortably the best performance of his career, the highlight of which was his first PGA Tour title at the Memorial Tournament – one of seven top 10s finishes. He can get his 2017 season off to a strong start at Summerlin, where he finished in eighth place this time last year, and he is available at a decent price too, with Coral offering stand-out odds of 60/1 (as short as 33/1 with Betfred).

Tony FinauTONY FINAU has finished 7th and 16th on his two previous visits to Summerlin and after a steady start to his new season – 26th at the Safeway Open and 33rd at the CIMB Classic in Malaysia – he should be in a positive frame of mind this week. He didn’t match the standards he set in 2015 during the 2016 season – although he did pick up the first PGA Tour win of his career in Puerto Rico. He can shine at odds of 40/1 with Coral, Betfred and Ladbrokes.
