Venue

The PGA Tour remains in Hawaii this week for the Sony Open at the Waialae Country Club, where Justin Thomas landed odds of 14/1 to make it two wins from two at the start of 2017. The par 70, 7,068-yard layout is not among the Tour’s most difficult and offers plenty of birdie opportunities, as Thomas showed when he opened with a round of 59 on his way to a remarkable 27-under-par total. The main hazards are 83 strategically placed bunkers and a number of right and left doglegs. Jimmy Walker secured back-to-back victories here in 2014 and 2015 and other previous winners include Zach Johnson, Ryan Palmer and Fabian Gomez.

Favourites

Jordan Spieth has finished in the top 10 at each of his last seven tournaments and was a winner three times in 2017 and the world number two heads the betting from the defending champion Thomas. Spieth is a 5/1 chance with Paddy Power and Bet365, while Thomas is at 8/1 with the same two firms. Marc Leishman was going well at Kapalua before a disastrous third round derailed his challenge, but the Aussie is the 16/1 third favourite across the board here. Brian Harman, who is looking to extend a run of four successive top 10s, is at 20/1 with Paddy Power, Ladbrokes and Coral and Kevin Kisner is the 25/1 fourth favourite.

Tips

BRIAN HARMAN has been hitting the ball as well as anybody so far this season and it has showed in his results – no other player has four top 10s on the 2017/18 PGA Tour. His accuracy off the tee has paid dividends here too, with three successive top 20 finishes to his name at this course. He started 2017 outside the world’s top 100, but is now ranked 23rd and in the form of his life. Betfair offer best price 20/1, with 7 places for each-way bets.

RUSSELL HENLEY has produced some solid and consistent golf over the last six months, not missing a cut since June, although he will be a little frustrated that he hasn’t returned better results than just a pair of top fives. He has a good record to build on here, with a couple of top 20s to his name since he lifted the trophy back in 2013. Betfair are offering stand-out odds of 40/1 – once again with those 7 places for each-way bets on this event.

XANDER SCHAUFFELE was one of the major success stories of 2017, with his victory at the season-ending Tour Championship elevating him into the world’s top 50 for the first time. He’s up to 26th in the world rankings after finishing second in Phoenix in November and he was a winner too at the Greenbrier Classic. He’s missed only one cut since May and deserves to be shorter than the best price of 45/1 available with both Betfred and Stan James.
