Serena Williams remains the favourite for this month’s US Open despite struggling for form in the run up to the tournament. The former world no.1, who suffered the heaviest defeat of her career when she was thrashed 6-0 6-1 by Johanna Konta in San Jose last week, went on to lose to Petra Kvitova in the second round in Cincinnati.
Nevertheless, the 23-time Grand Slam winner is a best price of 6/1* with Ladbrokes and Coral to record her seventh victory at Flushing Meadows, leading the market ahead of French Open champion Simona Halep at 7/1* with Bet365 and Wimbledon winner Angelique Kerber, who can be backed at 15/2* with Paddy Power.
The defending champion Sloane Stephens, meanwhile, is available at best odds of 11/1* with BetVictor. Williams, whose daughter Alexis will celebrate her first birthday during this year’s tournament, has reached at least the semi-finals on her last eight appearances in New York, winning the title four times in that period. She won her first Grand Slam title at the US Open way back in 1999.
