Sunday Horse Racing Tips

There’s more top class action at Leopardstown this afternoon with no fewer than four grade 1’s on the card.

Deloitte Novice Hurdle

First up is the Juvenile Hurdle, but with only six runners and a warm favourite, decent punting opportunities are hard to find.

Although there is an even hotter jolly in the Deloitte Novice Hurdle that follows, the size of the field gives each way players a chance and whilst Samcro is widely expected to cement his standing as the best young hurdler around, PALMOA BLUE and DUC DES GENIEVRES can be backed against him at odds that will give a decent place return.

Paloma Blue looks the pick of the Henry de Bromhead pair and is starting to translate his decent bumper form to hurdles.

Duc Des Genievres may not look the most obvious of the Willie Mullins runners, but he could improve more than his stablemates and the drop in trip looks to be in his favour.

William Fry Handicap Hurdle

There’s a decent staying handicap hurdle sandwiched between the grade 1’s at 2.25pm and Total Recall dominates the market here for Willie Mullins despite the large field. The Ladbrokes Trophy winner is thrown in now back over hurdles based on that chase form, but he is worth taking on, on the basis that you should never be afraid of one horse.

The Gordon Elliott pair look the most likely to give the favourite a hard race and the pair should be backed each way. Both FLAWLESS ESCAPE and DELTA WORK are lightly raced enough to have significant improvement in them now upped in trip.

Look out too for big runs from the other Mullins runners, Voix Du Reve and Giant Spirit.

Delta Work (ew)2.25 Leopardstown 14/1Bet365

Flogas Novice Chase

The grade 1 action returns with the Floga Novice Chase, where none of the eleven runners can be ruled out despite the range of prices.

On that basis it is worth backing a couple of big outsiders in the hope of a shock and the two we like are BON PAPA, for whom the first time tongue tie could be key, and THE STORYTELLER, who would have challenged Invitation Only last time out but for bad blunder two out.

AL BOUM PHOTO is the pick of the market leaders for us.

Unibet Irish Gold Cup

Last, but my no means least, of the day’s big races is the Irish Gold Cup where we would suggest backing VALSEUR LIDO to win not just this afternoon but also (non-runner, no bet) the Gold Cup itself in March.

This horse would have won this race in a canter two seasons ago but for falling at the last. Since then he has had his share of injury problems, and has changed stables, but he has shown enough to suggest he retains all his old ability, and don’t forget he has been second in a Ryanair and third in a JLT behind Vautour on both occasions.

Killultagh Vic is the dark horse and could be class apart if back to his very best, but a more solid second option is MINELLA ROCCO, who should be peaking now after three starts so far this season, the last of which was a decent fourth in the Christmas Chase here.

Chanelle Pharma Handicap Chase

The day’s big betting heat is the Chanelle Pharma Handicap Chase where the enigmatic Hells Kitchen could be vulnerable in such a big field. The three we like instead are LAKE TAKAPUNA, GWENCILY BERBAS and JETT. Vieux Morvan is a big danger.

Betfred are offering 5 places for each-way bets on this race.
