The Stadium Course at Sawgrass has hosted The Players Championship since 1982 and is one of the most famous venues in the United States, in part thanks to its iconic signature hole, the “Island Green” 17th, which only requires a pitching wedge but offers little margin for error. This par 72, 7,200 yard course is a tricky, risk and reward layout which presents a variety of challenges and it’s rarely a birdie-fest, with the last five winners all posting scores of 12 or 13 under par. The defending champion is Rickie Fowler, with other recent winners including Martin Kaymer, Tiger Woods and Matt Kuchar.

The unofficial “fifth major” attracts all the top stars and this year is no exception, with Rory McIlroy leading the betting after his near miss at the Wells Fargo Championship at the weekend. Jordan Spieth has been taking an extended break since his late collapse at Augusta, but he returns to action this week and is second in the betting at 10/1. Jason Day is at 12/1, with Fowler available at 20s as he looks to mount the first ever successful defence of this title. Justin Rose, Dustin Johnson and Adam Scott are also well fancied. Paddy Power are offering 7 places for each-way bets (1/5 odds for the place), or you can get 6 places at Bet365, BetVictorBetfred or Sky Bet (1/4 odds for the place) – just 5 places elsewhere.

Sergio-Garcia-GolfThere has long been a feeling that SERGIO GARCIA doesn’t get the maximum benefit from his obvious talent, but four years on from his last PGA Tour victory the Spaniard remains a strong consideration for this tournament. He has an excellent record at Sawgrass, claiming the title in 2008 and finishing inside the top 10 on five of his last 10 visits, including each of the last three – back him at 28/1 with those 7 places at Paddy Power.

Kevin NaWith three top 10 finishes in his last six appearances here at Sawgrass, KEVIN NA has an obvious liking for this set-up and his fine form this season makes him a strong runner at a big each-way price. After making a blistering start to the current season, Na’s results tailed off but he was back in form at Heritage last month, where he finished in a share of fourth – his fifth top five finish in his 14 appearances this season.

Branden GraceLast month we tipped BRANDEN GRACE at odds of 40/1 for the RBC Heritage and the South African obliged, earning his first PGA Tour title to add to the two he has already won on the European Tour this season. Grace is on the verge of breaking into the top 10 in the rankings for the first time and all that is lacking is a challenge at one of the biggest tournaments. He’s a 50/1 chance at Bet365, with those six places for each-way bets.
