Geraint Thomas leads the betting to be the BBC’s Sport Personality of the Year after Simon Yates completed a clean sweep of the 2018 Grand Tours for British cycling.
Thomas, who won the Tour de France, is a best price of 13/8* with Paddy Power to land the prestigious award in a year that won’t go down as one of the greatest for many British sports.
The Team Sky rider succeeded Chris Froome in winning cycling’s top prize, while it was Froome himself who had kicked things off with victory at the Giro D’Italia.
Yates, who rides for the Michelton-Scott team alongside his twin Adam, crossed the line in Madrid on Sunday to complete the hat-trick by winning the Vuelta a Espana.
It is only the third time that cyclists from the same country have won all three of the sport’s major honours in the same season, but the first time that the prizes have been taken by three different riders.
British cyclists have now won nine of the last 20 Grand Tours, including each of the last five.
The second favourite in the SPOTY betting is the Tottenham striker Harry Kane, who won the Golden Boot as England reached the semi-finals of the World Cup in Russia. Kane is a 5/2* chance with Bet365 and William Hill.
