Thursday Horse Racing Tips

It is a busy time for racing enthusiasts as hot on the heels of the Grand National meeting comes the Craven meeting at Newmarket, a two day fixture at Cheltenham and the Scottish National meeting at Ayr. Next week we also have Punchestown to look forward to.

Today is one of those rare days in the calendar when we have racing at the HQ of both flat and jump racing, and the feature contest on the level is the Craven itself.

bet365 Craven Stakes

The three year old colts who line up on trial for the 2,000 Guineas will relish the spring sun on their backs and with the yard having started the season so well we think GLORIOUS JOURNEY could be the one to beat for Charlie Appleby.

A lot will obviously depend on how forward these horses are after their winter breaks and how much they have improved in the off season, and being by Dubawi there is every chance that our selection will step up considerably on the decent form he showed last summer as he matures.

He obviously has hot favourite Roaring Lion to beat, but his stablemate, Masar, could also be a danger.

bet365 Wood Ditton Maiden Stakes

The Newmarket card opens with a competitive sprint handicap, but of more long term interest is the Wood Ditton which always uncovers a good horse or two.

From a punting perspective there is a lot of guess work involved as none of the runners have seen a racetrack before, but of those at the head of the market Surya and Military Band make plenty of appeal.

However, given the uncertainty and the size of the filed it may make more sense to back a couple at bigger prices and the two we like are HERE’S ALICE, a filly who gets weight from her rivals and who represents the red hot Charlie Hills yard, and MONOXIDE, a Derby entry for the up and comping Martyn Meade.

Paddy Power are offering 4 places for each-way bets on this race (just 3 elsewhere).

Abernant Stakes

The Group 3 Abernant Stakes follows and last year’s winner BRANDO looks the one to beat. He runs well fresh and has had a wind operation over the winter. He was good enough to land a Group 1 last season.

Favourite Le Brivido could be anything and Andre Fabre’s raiders are always feared, but the main danger could be SPIRIT OF VALOR for another training genius, Aiden O’Brien. This drop to 6f looks ideal for him.

EBF Mares’ Novices’ Handicap Chase

For some reason ITV have chosen to only broadcast one race live from Cheltenham and that contest is a mares’ listed handicap chase.

Plenty of the runners at Prestbury Park will have been running on very different ground through the winter so it will be a case of finding horses who will improve for the drying conditions. The Bay Birch, for example, has been winning on heavy so she looks worth opposing at the head of the market.

Instead, take a chance with MIDNIGHT TARGET and SHEER POETRY. The former has been in good form and should be suited by the drop in trip, whilst the latter has run well here before and is proven on the ground.

Sheer Poetry (ew)2.40 Cheltenham11/1Bet365

For those looking for some other decent bets on the rest of the card we would suggest BRILLARE MOMENTO (13/2) and REJAAH (33/1) in the 3.15pm.
