Venue

The Sentry Tournament of Champions – formerly sponsored by Hyundai – is the first event of every calendar year and takes place at the Plantation Course in Kapalua, Hawaii. It’s unlike every other tournament on the PGA Tour schedule as entrance is limited to those players who won on the previous year’s tour – 34 players will take part this year, including defending champion Justin Thomas, who was our 22/1 pick 12 months ago. This coastal links course is unique in that it plays to par 73 and is unusual in its marked changes in elevation and length. It has seven holes of more than 500 yards, but six par fours shorter than 400 yards, with the 1st, 17th and 18th holes featuring sharp descents – which make for a real test of judgement off the tee.

Favourites

Jordan Spieth, who won this tournament by an eight-shot margin in 2016, is the market leader at odds of 6/1 across the board, with his good friend Thomas available at 7/1 with Stan James. Victory here sparked a run of five successes for Thomas in 2017, including his first major at the PGA Championship, while The Open was among three titles for Spieth. Rickie Fowler, who won the Honda Classic in February before signing off for the year with victory at the Hero World Challenge, is a 7/1 chance, while Stan James are offering 15/2 about the 2013 champion Dustin Johnson, winner of four titles last year. Beyond the top four the field opens up, with Jon Rahm, Brooks Koepka and last year’s runner-up Hideki Matsuyama all at 12/1.

Tips

Patrick CantlayAfter two years away from the game, PATRICK CANTLAY finally began to realise his potential in the second half of 2017, rising to 38th in the world rankings with a run of strong performances that culminated in victory at the Shriners Hospitals event in November. Cantlay has been 15th or better on five of his last six starts and despite a seven-week hiatus he will be confident of enjoying a good week here. He’s available at 25/1 with BetVictor and Unibet.

MARC LEISHMAN has been a favourite of ours for some time and with the recent form he has shown he looks a cracking bet at best odds of 25/1 with Betfred and Unibet. The world number 12 was fourth on his last outing at the Australian PGA Championship a month ago, meaning he has finished sixth or better on four of his last six starts – and six of the last 11 – including his second win of 2017 at the BMW Championship in September.
