Tuesday Champions League Tips

We preview both of the Tuesday Champions League games featuring English teams – with Manchester United v CSKA Moscow and Chelsea v Atletico Madrid.

Manchester United would need to lose by 7 goals (and Basel win the other Group A game) for them to miss out on the last 16, and a point will secure them top spot.

But Jose Mourinho is not likely to rest too many stars, given that desire to at least draw against a side who have won their two other away group games (both 2-1).

Thus, while David De Gea and Zlatan Ibrahimovic will not be risked ahead of this Sunday’s Manchester Derby, the likes of Romelu Lukaku, Marcus Rashford, Antonio Valencia and Paul Pogba all look set to start at Old Trafford on Tuesday.

United, who are unbeaten in their last 39 home games, have also lost just 2 of their last 48 Champions League group games here (W34, D12) and won 4-1 in Moscow.

So, it’s little surprise that they are a best price of 1/2 with Bet365 to win this game, with CSKA available at best odds of 7/1 and the draw at 7/2 – both with Betfred.

To progress CSKA need to better Basel’s result (away at Benfica) and their best hope looks to be a draw here and for the Swiss side to lose in Portugal – if news filters through of Benfica taking the lead they’ll be doing everything to hang on for a draw.

Although they beat Benfica 2-0 in their last group game, that was CSKA’s first clean sheet in the Champions League since November 2011 – a run of 32 games.

But with a draw also satisfactory for United, we suggest backing the 1-1 scoreline here, along with a 2-1 home win, both available at best price 8/1 with BetVictor.

The aforementioned Pogba is suspended for United’s next three league games – back him to take out his frustration here and score a goal at 11/4 with Paddy Power.

Chelsea v Atletico Madrid

Chelsea are already through to the last 16, but they need to win this game to secure top spot – with Roma big favourites to beat Qarabag in the other Group C game.

Atletico know that only the miracle of Roma not beating Qarabag in Rome (they are just 1/8 to do so), plus victory for them here would be enough for them to progress.

But with Antonio Conte’s side needing all 3 points to finish top, he will be starting all his big names against a side with such a strong recent heritage in this competition – who are third in the Spanish league despite their troubles in the Champions League.

Chelsea won the reverse fixture in Madrid 2-1 back in September, courtesy of a 93rd minute winner, and we expect this to be another closely fought affair on Tuesday.

Diego Simeone’s side are unbeaten in La Liga so far this season (W8, D6) and indeed that late Chelsea winner in Madrid was their only defeat of the season.

It’s also worth noting that in their last 20 games in all competitions, Atletico have conceded just two first-half goals – and a low scoring game here looks a certainty.

All things considered, we think that a bet on the draw at 11/4 with BetVictor looks good value, while we’ll also take a punt on the 0-0 Correct Score at 8/1 with Betfair.
