VAR System Makes English Domestic Bow

VAREnglish football will get its first taste of the controversial VAR system this week, as both the Brighton vs Crystal Palace FA Cup tie and the Chelsea vs Arsenal Carabao Cup semi-final will see the technology trialled for the first time.

A host of incidents have blighted the introduction of video refereeing in other countries, with an official sacked in Germany for allegedly influencing decisions in favour of his local team and some controversies in Australia’s A League.

Most bookmakers are opting out of taking bets on penalties and red cards to be awarded in the two games covered by VAR this week in light of a spike in the statistics in other leagues, although Paddy Power offer 10/3 that there will be a penalty at the Amex Stadium on Monday night.
