Sebastian Vettel is a best price of 9/2 with Ladbrokes to win the Formula 1 Drivers Championship after his victory in the season-opening Australian Grand Prix.
The German, who has been trimmed from 5/1, took advantage of the imposition of a virtual safety car after Romain Grosjean came to a halt on the track, using the slowdown to make his pit-stop and gain vital seconds on Lewis Hamilton, who had already visited the pits with the race at full speed.
Despite Hamilton maintaining a faster pace for the majority of the race, the timing of Vettel’s tyre change was to prove decisive and gave him an early advantage in what is set to be another hard-fought duel for the title. Hamilton, who won his fourth world title in 2017 and who was fastest in qualifying in Melbourne, remains the clear market leader at best odds of 1/2 with Bet365 and Coral after finishing five seconds back in second place.
As the race drew towards a close, the Mercedes driver was able to cut Vettel’s lead to less than a second, before technical issues prevented him from maintaining the pace required to overtake in the final laps.
