Steve Bruce knows a thing or two about getting teams promoted from the Championship and as the season nears its business end he seems to have found a winning formula at Aston Villa, who are now odds-on with some firms to return to the Premier League.
Ahead of next weekend’s derby showdown with neighbours Birmingham, who have had a similar upturn in fortunes under Steve Cotterill, Villa are on a run of six consecutive league victories, blowing away the gloom of a poor run of results in December. Saturday’s 3-2 win over Burton means they have won each of their last three at Villa Park, scoring 11 goals in the process, with striker Scott Hogan putting his long-term fitness problems behind him with a run of five goals in five games. With 16 games remaining, Villa are unlikely to catch runaway leaders Wolves, but they are hot on the heels of Derby, who are just one point above them in second place. Gary Rowett’s side will visit Villa Park for the penultimate game of the season, but there will be plenty of twists and turns before that. Betfred are offering both clubs at Evens to be promoted, with fourth-placed Cardiff at 2/1 after their big win at Leeds on Saturday.
