Bubba Watson got into gear for next month’s Open Championship with a thrilling three-shot victory at the Travelers Championship in Connecticut.
As third round leader Paul Casey faded with a round of 72 on Sunday, Watson stormed through to claim his third win at TPC River Highlands with a seven-under par closing round of 63, adding to his successes in 2010 and 2015 at a venue that tends to favour powerful hitters. Watson doesn’t have a great record at the third major of the season, with his best Open result being a share of 23rd in 2012.
However, most major bookmakers have moved to cut his price for this year’s edition at Carnoustie, with Paddy Power offering best odds of 80/1.
Another man hitting form at the right time is the surprise 2009 Open champion Stewart Cink, who closed with a round of 62 at the Travelers to earn a share of second place. It followed on from his fourth place finish at the St Jude Classic earlier in the month, a year on from his previous top 10 on the PGA Tour. Cink tied for sixth place the last time The Open was held at Carnoustie in 2007, making him one of the more appealing outsiders at odds of 300/1 with Bet365.
