Welsh National 2018 Tips

It is Coral Welsh National day at Chepstow and, as usual, the ground is riding soft, so this will be a real test of stamina with only a handful of runners likely to complete the race.

Coral Welsh Grand National Handicap Chase

Given the history of the yard in the contest you have to respect any of David Pipe’s runners and he has two very strong contenders this year in the shape of Ramses de Teillee and VIEUX LION ROUGE. Slight preference is for the latter as he has proven stamina and caught the eye staying on late at Aintree last time out. He had a wind operation in the summer and that may have improved him based on the evidence of that effort.

The main danger could be last year’s fourth, VINTAGE CLOUDS, who was unlucky in running on a couple of occasions in that renewal. He went on to finish third in the Scottish National and so, again, is a proven stayer. His trainer also thinks he is a stronger horse this year and he deserves to win one of these big prizes.

Finally, it is also worth backing ELEGANT ESCAPE to win, to at least cover your stakes on the other selections.

The Colin Tizard runner could be a class apart on these terms and his effort in the Ladbrokes Trophy last time out suggested he is ready for this step up in trip.

Others to consider include Folsom Blue and Dawson City.

Download The Coral App Handicap Chase

The televised action from Wales kicks off with a handicap chase at 1.05pm and we think the Tizzards have strong claims here too with the veteran, GRAND VISION, worth chancing on his first start since a wind operation. He loves these conditions and this looks his ideal trip these days.

The big danger is TOP GAMBLE, who has looked worth trying at this longer trip on recent starts over 2 miles. He was good enough to finish third in last season’s Grand Annual.

Coral Finale Juvenile Hurdle

The Finale Hurdle follows and we think it is worth taking a chance on TAZKA, who should be suited by this stiff test of stamina. The different conditions may enable her to overturn Kempton form with Quel Destin and she looks the best value.

‘The Smart Money’s On Coral’ Handicap Hurdle

The other televised race is a competitive handicap hurdle, where there is plenty of decent course form on offer.

VIRGINIA CHICK is one of those who has won here before and he ran well on his comeback in a competitive race at Newbury recently. His young rider seems to get on particularly well on him.

The much more experienced ANTEROS is also worth backing as he has dropped down the weights to a winning mark. He showed glimpses of a revival here last time out.

Wayward Lad Novices’ Chase

The two mile chasers take centre stage at Kempton, with the novices first up in the Wayward Lad.

Kalashnikov is one of our favourite horses in training, but we think he might be better over further in time and with Dynamite Dollars also possibly needing a stiff two miles on soft ground to be at his best, the one to side with is MARIA’S BENEFIT, who also gets a handy mares’ allowance.

Unibet Desert Orchid Chase

In the Desert Orchid Altior looks unbeatable, but the one for the forecast could prove to be DIEGO DU CHARMIL, who may be better suited by conditions than Speredek.

DEAUVILLE DANCER looks the big danger and is also worth backing.

32Red Casino Mares’ Handicap Hurdle

Finally, in the mares’ handicap hurdle at 1.55pm take a chance on SHAMBRA in the hope that the step up in trip improves Lucy Wadham’s four year old. Chilli Filli looks the main danger.
