Find out more about the European Under 21 Championship
The European Under 21 Championship always causes a stir within football circles, as fans of the sport look to unearth the next great European talents. This year will be the 24th instalment of the U21 European Championship, and it will take place between 9th June and 2nd July 2023.
2023’s European Under 21 Championship will be co-hosted by Romania and Georgia. When the Euro U21 Championship started, 12 teams competed against each other in the finals, although this has been extended to 16 teams since the 2021 tournament. There’s a strict age restriction at the start of the qualification process, so this time only players born on or after 1st January 2000 are eligible.
The European Under 21 Championship takes place every two years, so the last time the competition took place was in 2021. An expanded 16-team tournament kicked off with the group stages in Hungary and Slovenia, and ended with Germany securing their third under 21 crown.
The 2021 European Under-21 Championship was staged in two sections, with the groups in March 2021, before the knockout stages in June 2021. In the group stages, each group consisted of four teams and each pool winners and runners-up qualified for the quarter-finals. Here’s how the teams were grouped:
Group A: Netherlands, Germany, Romania and Hungary (co-hosts)
Group B: Spain, Italy, Czech Republic and Slovenia (co-hosts)
Group C: Denmark, France, Russia and Iceland
Group D: Portugal, Croatia, Switzerland and England
The quarter-finals then saw Netherlands, Spain and Portugal advance, alongside Germany who needed a penalty shootout to scrape past Denmark. They went on to defeat Netherlands in the semis and then beat Portugal in the final 1-0, courtesy of a Lukas Nmecha goal.
To date, Italy and Spain have been the most successful team with five titles each, although Italy’s last win was way back in 2004.
As is the norm, all the fifty-five nations threw their hats in the ring from the initial group stages, with co-hosts Romania and Georgia grabbing two automatic qualification spots. This left 14 spots which were contested for in games that took place between March 2021 and November 2022.
The 14 qualification spots will be filled by 9 group winners, the best runner-up and four play-off winners.
