The oldest Grand Slam Tournament takes place in June and July, and we are sure that the players already have their heads in the game as they prepare to enter one of the world’s most popular tennis championships.
You enjoy watching tennis, but don’t quite understand it? No worries, we have prepared a short Wimbledon guide to help you understand how the Championship actually works, how many rounds there are, and where does it take place.
Among the four Grand Slam Tournaments ( other being the Australian Open, the US Open, and the French Open), Wimbledon is often considered as the most prestigious one. It takes place at the All England Club. This year’s Wimbledon will begin on 27th June.
The Tournament consists of a few different events:
These are the so-called, main events. There are Junior and Invitation events as well.
Matches in the Gentlemen’s Singles and Gentlemen’s Doubles are played as the best of 5 sets. All other events are played as best of 3 sets. Both Singles, Gentlemen’s and Ladies’, consist of 128 players.
The players are drawn randomly, apart from the 32 players who have been given seedings in both Gentlemen’s and Ladies’ Singles and the 16 teams in Doubles. Then, the Tournament organizers distribute the top seeding players and teams to prevent them from playing against each other too early in the competition.
How do they choose which players are the top 32 seeds? Basically, they select the top 32 players in the ATP and WTA ranking lists.
After the qualifying rounds, where the winner from each match continues to another round, we arrive in the Quarter-Finals, Semi-Finals, and of course, the Finals. The whole event is highly publicised and present in the media. That includes the online betting platforms, where you can find numerous Wimbledon betting offers.
Like we said, Wimbledon is the oldest of the four Grand Slam Tournaments. With that long of a tradition, there were definitely some memorable and exquisite moments.
First, let’s see which players have had the most success on this grass court tournament:
Now, let’s mention some records and memorable moments from Wimbledon history. The longest match ever played lasted for 11 hours and 5 minutes, between John Isner and Nicholas Mahut, with 183 played games in total.
Another historic win would be Andy Murray’s victory in 2013 when he became the first Brit to win the Tournament since 1936. The youngest players to win Wimbledon in history were Boris Becker at 17 and Lottie Dod at the tender age of 15.
Of course, every year there are some unexpected events at Wimbledon, so we recommend you watch the tournament, as we are certain there will be some exciting moments and matches. Of course, that includes some great Wimbledon betting offers.
The Championships, Wimbledon was founded in 1877. At first, there were only Gentlemen’s Singles played, women weren’t allowed in the court. Of course, during the 80s, that situation changed, and the first Men’s Doubles and Ladies’ Singles were introduced.
In the beginning, the Tournament was open to amateurs as there were not many or none professional players. It lasted until 1968 when the qualifying rounds were first introduced. That’s when the structure of Wimbledon was established and it hasn’t changed drastically ever since.
Of course, every year has had some surprises. One of the main concerns is the Wimbledon weather. Due to its geographical position, even the summers in the UK are full of rainy days. The weather forecasts are carefully followed, but it happens from time to time that the matches are delayed or even interrupted due to rain. We are yet to see what the Wimbledon weather will be like this year.
