Latest UK Election News

With the general election just weeks away, all the political parties have kicked into campaign mode. Both Rishi Sunak and Keir Starmer have already been up and down the UK, making public appearances and talking to voters. The UK election betting markets will fluctuate as each party continues their campaign. We’ll keep you up to date with the media interviews, policy announcements, and other political happenings that are sure to affect the betting odds.

10th June – Sunak’s first TV interview since the D-Day scandal goes very poorly.

Rishi Sunak stumbled and stuttered through his first big media appearance since the D-Day scandal. He appeared on the BBC’s Panorama, and journalist Nick Robinson pulled no punches. Robinson quizzed Sunak on the Conservative’s record in power, the shocking election campaign, and his promises for the future. Sunak repeated his tax attack on Labour despite the controversy around the accuracy of the claims.

7th June – Sunak issues an apology after leaving D-Day events early.

Rishi Sunak is forced to say sorry for his ‘mistake’ after deciding to leave D-Day events early so he could attend an interview with ITV. His decision to leave early is expected to further damage what has been a faltering election campaign so far. Based on the latest UK election betting odds, Labour look increasingly likely to secure a significant majority.

4th June – Starmer and Sunak go head to head in first TV debate. Both seem to underwhelm.

The two men fighting to be the next Prime Minister went head to head on ITV in a live debate, but many viewers were left underwhelmed by both. Both candidates faced questions on housing, immigration, the economy and various other topics. Many have criticised the condensed format, and the debate has had little effect on the polls or betting odds.

3rd June – Farage announces he’s going to stand in Clacton. His u-turn could devastate the Tories.

Performing a U-turn, Nigel Farage announced at a press conference that he will stand as an MP for Reform UK in the 2024 general election. This announcement is a hammer blow to Rishi Sunak and the Tories. Reform UK are likely to attract many Conservative voters in marginal seats.

30th May – The Dianne Abbott suspension saga takes centre stage.

Dianne Abbott was suspended by the Labour Party in April 2023 after making controversial comments in an interview. The election announcement put the Labour hierarchy in a jam, as they claimed the investigation into her remarks still hadn’t concluded. Abbott claimed she was banned from running as a Labour candidate, but Keir Starmer has said she isn’t. This row is the first hiccup in the Labour campaign, but it hasn’t affected the betting odds as they remain the heavy favourites.

27th May – Sunak announces new ‘Triple Lock Plus’ promise for pensions.

Rishi Sunak announced the ‘Triple Lock Plus’ pension promise in another attempt to appeal to his core vote. This headline policy would protect pensions against income tax. Given that this policy is aimed at voters who already lean Tory, its announcement did little to change the election polls or the betting markets.

25th May – Sunak promises to bring back National Service for 18-year-olds.

It was a gaffe-filled first few days for Sunak on the campaign trail. He asked workers in Wales if they were looking forward to Euro 2024 and also visited the place where the Titanic was built. Trying to swing the momentum, Sunak announced his first headline policy, the return of National Service. It indeed produced a reaction, but it was far from wholly positive. Sunak’s bold commitment hardly moved the UK election betting odds.

22nd May – Starmer and Labour launch their General Election campaign, focusing on ‘Change’.

Keir Starmer and Labour had clearly been planning for the election well ahead of time. He launched his campaign at a press conference hours after Sunak revealed the election date. He gave a slick press conference speech, focusing heavily on a platform of ‘change’. The betting markets have Starmer as a big favourite.

22nd May – Rishi Sunak surprises many by announcing a summer election.

In a wet press conference outside of No.10, Rishi Sunak announced that the country will go to the polls on July 4th. The move came as a major surprise, given that he’d said the election would not happen until late 2024. Political pundits and opinion polls don’t give Sunak and the conservatives much chance of a positive result, and the betting odds reflect that.

How can I bet on the UK general election?

There are plenty of ways to bet on the upcoming UK General Election. You can wager on the overall results at most bookies, but some offer a more complex selection of political betting markets. Below, we’ll run you through the most popular ways to bet on July’s election.

Prime Minister After Election Latest Betting Odds

The race to be the next UK Prime Minister has commenced. Labour holds a significant advantage in the election polls, a sentiment mirrored in the betting markets. The bookmakers believe Keir Starmer is the clear frontrunner and that Rishi Sunak would almost need a miracle to win on 4th July. Indeed, Sunak isn’t even a certainty to hold on to his own seat, with Labour given odds of just 3/1 (25%) to take Richmond and Northallerton.

Are political betting odds always right?

No is the straightforward answer. Like all betting markets, bookmakers determine political betting odds by the amount of money wagered on a particular outcome. The 2016 US Election, regarded as one of the biggest political upsets in recent history, is an example of the betting odds being completely wrong. Bookmakers initially gave Donald Trump a slim chance of winning against Hillary Clinton, offering odds of 5/1 for his victory at 8pm on election day. However, as the states declared their results, it became evident that Trump would secure the presidency. This remarkable result is a compelling example of why you shouldn’t count on political betting odds being 100% accurate.

What are the polls saying about the UK general election?

Since Rishi Sunak called the election on 22 May, a series of opinion polls have been published. The majority of these poll results paint a challenging picture for the current PM. Keir Starmer and Labour have consistently led in almost all of them, although the extent of that lead does fluctuate from poll to poll.

One notable trend has been that Labour’s poll lead has not really changed during the opening weeks of the election campaign. If you believe the polls, Sunak has failed to make much of an impact on voters since announcing the election.

The BBC collates the most significant UK election poll results to provide insight into overall voter intention. This graph shows that Keir Starmer and Labour really do have a commanding lead. However, election polls are not 100% accurate. Like the political betting odds, they should be used only as a guide.

Yes, you can bet on the outcome of the UK general election set for 4th July. Most betting sites will have several UK political betting markets, including Next Prime Minister and Winning Party. Some also have odds on different aspects of the election like voter turnout percentage.

With a few weeks to go, the betting odds and opinion polls have Keir Starmer and Labour as heavy favourites. However, political betting odds are not always accurate, so there’s still a chance Rishi Sunak and The Tories could spring an upset.
