How does each-way betting work?
An each-way (E/W) wager is formed of two bets, one on the horse to win and one on the horse to place. Having two bets means your stake is doubled, but also means you’re more likely to get a return on your bet. The place part of the bet will always be a fraction of the odds of the win bet, typically between 1/5 and 1/4.
Here’s a straightforward E/W betting example:
You place a £5 E/W bet on a horse at odds of 5/1. This bet will cost you £10 overall, £5 to win and £5 to place. The bookmaker is paying three places on this race at 1/5 of the odds.
If your horse wins, you’ll receive returns for both the win and the place, totalling £40.
If your horse finishes second or third, you’ll receive payment for the place part of your bet but not the win bet. The odds for the place bet are 1/5 of the win odds, so you’d win £10.
The number of places for each race depends on the number of horses running and the bookmakers’ terms. It’s essential to check the specific place terms with the bookmaker when placing an each-way bet, as these can vary.
